Protect your joints.
Do not keep your joints in the same position for an extended period of time. Balance the amount of rest and work that you get through out the day.
Use the strongest joints you can for any job.(ie. use your legs and not your back)
Stretch regularly.
Regular stretching should be a daily part of routine. Stretching will help warm up muscles and tendons to help prevent injuries by making them less apt to tear. 10 minutes each day should be taken to stretch, to work each muscle group.
Cool down.
At regular intervals all physical activity should be stopped. A rest should be taken in a cool shaded environment. Spray arthritic areas with a cool mist or use a cold compress to reduce pain and swelling.
Get up and get going.
Increase in exercise will help reduce joint pain as well as increase the flexibility and strength of the muscles. Exercise will also help in stress management, weight control, and give an overall feeling of well being. You may also take water exercise courses that are offered by the Arthritis Foundation.
Massage may help.
To reduce inflammation and swelling and to sooth sore muscles massage therapy is a viable coarse of action. When massaging is used make sure to use either oil or cream to make the massage more gentle.
Massage area for at least 5 minute, up to 10 minutes daily.
Make sure to keep you weight in balance.
Being overweight, even moderately, will have a great impact on weight bearing joints. Losing extra weight lowers the risk of osteoarthritis of the knee joints.
Losing weight will also help slow down the progression of arthritis.
Diagnosis is a key.
If some of the symptoms that you have been experiencing are pain, stiffness, swelling of joints for more than a week, a physician should be consulted to get a diagnosis. Keep in mind that there are more than 100 types of arthritis.
So it is important to get the correct diagnosis.
Take the medication the way it is prescribed.
DO NOT stop taking any prescribed medication whether you feel it is working or not. Consult your physician first. In some instances,it may take from 2 weeks to several months for medications to be effective. Always be on the lookout for new options. There are new discoveries all the time for the treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis as well as other types of the disease.
A physician can always be consulted about new medications if the medication that you are taking is not performing as it should.
